Union Jack Beginners CAL!

Hello and welcome to the first Totallee CAL!!
The purpose of this Cal is to:
Give complete beginners the opportunity to try out the Crochet-By-Numbers technique.
A chance to complete a small piece from start to finish.
Ask any questions no matter how silly they seem
HAVE A BIT OF FUN!
I won't be putting time limits on any of the steps as this is a go-at-your-own-pace thing
So please feel free to take part at any time, ask questions via the tag board on the left hand side menu and give it a whirl !

So after yesterday's entry, hopefully you will have your two rows of blue border and are now ready to start introducing colour !!
Don't panic if you still haven't got the hang of the single crochet stitch yet. Be sure to watch the tutorial videos and pace yourself through the introductory vlog and it will come eventually

Also, it was brought to my attention that the pattern was stating two stitches in blue followed by one stitch in blue. It has now been changed to read 3 stitches in blue and so on If you have already printed it out and are following it, that's okay, it's now written a bit more clearly though.

CAL VLOG - PART 2 - Colour!

This second vlog walks you through how to do the colour changes for our union jack on a Right Side (RS) row. I'll apologise in advance for being a little side-tracked during this - I really shouldn't have music on in the background!! Distracting!! And as you'll see i'm EASILY distracted !!
Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!!
I hope you're all enjoying it thus far !!

Time to get this CAL on the road!!!!!
You will find the pattern for the union jack swatch located below this entry. Please feel free to copy, paste it and print it out. This will make it much easier to follow and cross off each of the stitches as you complete it
FIRST THINGS FIRST
If you are new to the world of crochet, Welcome !!
Although the pattern below may seem a little daunting at first, feel absolutely free to take your time, ask questions and make truckloads of frustrating mistakes because if you are anything like me when I first started, i'll consider you strange if you don't feel like stabbing your computer screen with your crochet hook at the first colour change
So let's start with the 2 basic crochet stitches that are used in the CBN technique... the CHAIN (c) and the SINGLE CROCHET (sc)...

CHAIN STITCH

This video from Lionbrand.com is great at showing you how to work a chain stitch. There are also terrific pictures and step by step instructions on their page HERE!

SINGLE CROCHET STITCH

This video from Lionbrand.com is great at showing you how to work a single crochet stitch. There are also terrific pictures and step by step instructions on their page HERE!
As with the chain stitch, these guys are much better at teaching it than me

CAL VLOG - PART 1

This introductory vlog covers the materials being used and demonstrates the chain stitch and the single crochet as we crochet the first 2 rows of the union jack !! Remember to ask questions or leave feedback on how you are going via the tagboard on the letf-hand side of the page

Okay, just watching the video back (cringing as I do so..) the 4th single crochet stitch I do on the first row, I actually double-crocheted that by mistake, it wasn't a loose stitch at all, so don't pay attention to that bit, because clearly I wasn't either lol

Pattern!!

You will need:
A crochet hook between 3mm and 4.5mm in size
Scissors
20gms?! (in other words, not very much!!) (Australian 8ply) of the colours listed in the colour key below!

First line (RS) is RightSide, second line (WS) is WrongSide.

The first stitch on the first row is the bottom right hand corner of the final piece.
Tie off's must be pulled through after completing a WS row.

Cast on (CHAIN) 25 stitches // and away you go!!
